Sprinkler Hydraulic Calculation

Sprinkler hydraulic calculation, water demand, pipe sizing, fire pump and water supply review for NFPA 13, EN 12845 and project-specific fire protection systems.

A sprinkler system is only as reliable as the design criteria behind its hydraulic model. Pipe size alone does not determine performance. Hazard classification, storage arrangement, sprinkler technology, design area, elevation, friction losses, hose allowances, water supply and fire-pump performance must work together.

FK SOLUTION provides sprinkler hydraulic calculation and independent hydraulic review for new designs, existing systems and refurbishment projects. Calculations can be structured around the applicable NFPA 13, EN 12845, employer or authority criteria defined for the project.

For warehouses and high-piled storage, the correct commodity, rack arrangement, storage height, ceiling height and sprinkler solution should be established before the hydraulic model is treated as valid.

What We Review

  • Hazard and storage classification
  • Sprinkler type, K-factor and spacing
  • Design density / required discharge
  • Hydraulic design area
  • Pipe diameters and friction coefficients
  • Elevation differences
  • Valves and equipment losses
  • Hose / hydrant allowances where applicable
  • Water tank effective capacity
  • Fire-pump curve
  • Available water supply
  • Most remote and, where required, favourable hydraulic areas

Existing Systems

Existing sprinkler systems should be reassessed when the building use, storage commodity, rack configuration, storage height, sprinkler heads, piping arrangement or fire pump changes. An old hydraulic calculation may no longer represent the actual installation or hazard.

Deliverables

  • Hydraulic calculation report
  • Node-referenced hydraulic diagram
  • Water demand summary
  • Pump and water supply assessment
  • Calculation review report
  • As-built discrepancy list
  • Alternative sizing / optimisation scenarios

Is a large fire pump automatically sufficient?

No. The pump curve must meet the actual system demand at the required flow and pressure while remaining compatible with the system pressure limits.

Should the calculation be updated after storage changes?

Yes, if the change affects the design hazard or applicable storage criteria.

Can you review a calculation prepared by another designer?

Yes. We can compare the model assumptions, pipe network, sprinkler data, pump curve and water supply against the project design basis.
